easily bar accounted for by strong racial prejudice and antipathy. I shall confine myself to reply to those statements which they allege to be true and on which they have seemingly. formed their opinions.
4. In page 3. paragraph 4, Appendix A.of the Report, Dr. Ayres is represented to have said in effect that I and Dr. Wharry could not agree. This is not true. Dr. Wharry and I had always agreed, and the only occasions on which we differed were, when Dr. Ayres and Dr. Wharry disagreed with each other; and as I was under Dr. Ayres, I was bound to carry out his orders, and this accounts for the dissatisfaction of Dr.; Wharry with me at times. Whenever I did as Dr. Wharry wished me to do, Dr. Ayres was displeased. Dr. Wharry. as was generally known in this Colony, had for a long time maintain- ed the necessity of an Assistant Superintendent being appointed to
the Government Civil Hospital; Dr. Ayres was strongly opposed to it. I was appointed to that post by Sir John Pope Hennessy in 1880, and when I was ordered to take charge of the Lock Hospital, Dr. Wharry again asked for an assistant. Dr. Ayres, in order I believe to make
some sort of a concession to Dr.; Wharry, ordered me to give assist- ance to Dr. Wharry in case of any emergency at night time, if asked
for.
Dr. Wharry was not satisfied with this arrangement. I was
not under him and I had no official standing at the Civil Hospital.
It was during this time, and owing to the awkward position in which I was placed at the Civil Hospital, that two trifling incidents hap- pened, to which Dr. Ayres alluded when he stated that I could not
agree with Dr. Wharry. I think it is useless to relate here those
wo incidents. I beg here to submit a copy of a letter from Dr. Wharry to me (marked A in the Appendix hereto) showing the state of
affairs at that particularly unfortunate time.
5. In the same paragraph, Dr. Ayres further states that Dr. Wharry said I was of no service to him. The incorrectness of this assertion can best be answeered by several extracts from Dr., Wharry's
Annual Reports.
